Joy Is Not a Feeling. Joy Is the Ground.
We have been thinking about joy wrong.
We have been treating it as a feeling. Something that arrives when the right conditions are met. When things are going well, when the people we love are okay, when the calendar is clear and the weather is good and nothing is on fire. Joy as the reward for having enough things go right at the same time.
But that version of joy is hostage to circumstance. It comes and goes with the weather. It cannot be relied upon. And chasing it, trying to manufacture and maintain the right conditions for it, is exhausting in a way that is hard to articulate because it never quite works.
There is a different kind of joy. Not the feeling that arrives when things go right. The ground underneath all of it. The thing that is there even when the weather is bad, even when things are hard, even when you are in the I don't know or the slow rebuild or the middle of something you did not choose.
That kind of joy is not about what is happening. It is about who is doing the happening. It is the sense of being essentially okay underneath whatever is on the surface. Congruent. Connected to yourself. Present in your own life. Not happy necessarily. Not comfortable necessarily. But okay in a way that does not depend on the conditions being right.
That is what we are actually looking for. Not the feeling. The ground.
