One Day She Rolled Over and Something Was Different

There is no announcement. That is the part that is hardest to explain to someone who has not been through it.

You are in it, and then one day you are slightly less in it, and you cannot point to what changed because nothing changed. The same day, the same life, the same coffee in the same cup. And yet something has shifted, just slightly, just enough to be noticeable if you are paying the right kind of attention.

It does not feel like recovery. Not the way recovery is supposed to feel, which is triumphant and clear and visible to anyone watching. It feels more like: hm. Something is different. Not better, necessarily. Just different. A degree of ease that was not there yesterday. A fraction of space where there was none before.

The slow rebuild does not announce itself. It accumulates. Quietly, underneath the surface, while you are busy just getting through the days. And one morning you notice it. Not because something happened but because enough small things have been happening for long enough that they have added up to something you can feel.

That is not a small thing. That is everything. That is the whole machinery of it working exactly the way it is supposed to work, invisibly and without fanfare, until the day you wake up and it is no longer invisible.

You did not have to see it happening for it to have been happening.
