That Is Not Fog. Those Are Clouds.

There is a particular kind of not-knowing that feels like being lost but is not actually being lost.

It feels like fog. Like the visibility is down and you cannot see where you are going and the familiar landmarks have gone soft and indistinct and you are not sure which direction is forward. It is disorienting in a way that is hard to explain to someone who is not in it, because from the outside everything looks fine. You are moving. You are handling things. You look like yourself. Inside it feels like moving through something thick and without clear edges.

Here is what is true about that feeling: you are not in fog. You are in clouds.

The difference is altitude. Fog is what happens when you are at ground level and the visibility drops. Clouds are what happens when you are high enough that you are moving through them. They feel the same from the inside. They are not the same thing at all.

The woman who is rebuilding slowly, who is getting through the days without a clear picture of what she is building toward, who cannot yet see the shape of what comes next, is not lost in fog. She is moving through clouds. She has altitude she does not yet have language for.

The view clears. It always does. Not on a schedule. But it clears.
